Ok, same rules as before. I’ve knocked up a new audio file containing the opening snippets of 20 songs (mp3 | 676k), some mere milliseconds in length. The songs are all sorts of genre’s and aren’t organised in alphabetical order this time.
Now you guess the songs.
UPDATE: Here’s the answers people:
- Mamma Mia – Abba
- Let It Be – Beatles
- Paranoid – Black Sabbath
- Don’t Fear the Reaper – Blue Oyster Cult
- Boys Don’t Cry – The Cure
- Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting – Elton John
- Lose Yourself – Eminem
- Original Sin – INXS
- Kids in America – Kim Wilde
- Heard It Through The Grapevine – Marvin Gaye
- Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough – Michael Jackson
- The Ship Song – Nick Cave
- You Can Call Me Al – Paul Simon
- Kick it – Peaches
- Paranoid Android – Radiohead
- Jumpin Jack Flash – Rolling Stones
- Pretty Woman – Roy Orbison
- Smooth Operator – Sade
- Caught by the Fuzz – Supergrass
- Three Girl Rhumba – Wire
The only two that weren’t guess correctly were Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison and Original Sin by INXS. Otherwise fab guessing by Maxine, Fluffy, Ray, Clem, Ruth and our winner Tuppence. Bravo!
I can’t believe I have let this ditract from the task that is the reason I am still sitting here at my desk at 8.30 on Friday night……..
And then I could only get 10! But I’m not gonna hide my shame:
Mamma Mia – Abba
Ben Folds – Golden Slumbers (or it could be an actual beatles song I fear)
Blue Oyster Cult – Don’t fear the Reaper
Saturday Night – Elton John
Kim Wilde – Kids in America
Michael Jackson – Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough (I’m just not sure how I felt as I typed that line….)
Paul Simon – Call me Al (title?)
Rolling Stones – Jumpin Jack Flash (Do you like music??!!)
Terrence Trent Darby – Sign Your Name
OK – fill in the gaps and shame me!
OK, I agree with Maxine re Mamma Mia, Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough, You Can Call Me Al, and various others (just realised that I’m not going to list them all).
I’m sure I heard ‘Heard it Through the Grapevine’…
and a bit of Nick Cave, ‘Ships’…
Possibly ‘Let It Be’?
And there’s a bit that could potentially be ‘Sign Your Name’ or ‘Smooth Operator’… I’m leaning towards the latter.
It’s difficult, I’m not at home with my vast music collection to compare and contrast!!!
How do you do these, Boud? I want a go.
Daniel this is a brilliant way of allowing me to pretend I have something worthwhile to do on a Friday night at home.

Yeah, that last one is so Elastica.
And did I hear a bit of ‘Caught By the Fuzz’?
Man, I need to get out more.
durrr…
google proper research shows that Wire’s “Three Girl Rhumba” (1993) came out well before Elastica’s “Connection” (1995).
… and the Peaches track is called Kick It, not Rip it Up.
I am just making shit up now.

I just stumbled across this hilarious example of a ‘windswept’ indie combover job.

Wire – The Car Song
Oh, and when I said Wire, I could also mean Klonhertz’s ‘Three Girl Rhumba’.
You guys are too effing clever. I think between everyone all 20 have been guessed.
Number 20 was a curly one, it’s Three Girl Rhuma by Wire. Elastica nicked the main riff for Connection, a courtcase ensued in which Elastica settled out of court. The song was recently covered by Klonhertz. Bit of trivia for you.
I’ll post the full answers later.
Not related but I keep finding your photos in music magazines! Glanced through Hot Press today and an entire spread of photos from SXSW looked all too familiar. Sure enough, “Photography Daniel Boud”.
Nice 🙂
Ah yes zosia, you’ve discovered my Hot Press photos. Was pretty stoked to see so many in print.
The winner of this quiz, with 17/20 is declared to be…. Tuppence! Mwa xx
🙂
Right back at ya.
Woo! Second comes right after first! Guys?!
