A while ago someone asked me who my favourite photographers are and i struggled to come up with any names he’d recognise. I realised all my favourite photographers are people whose work i know from Flickr. Sure there’s a handful of big name photographers i like, but it’s my flickr contacts who really inspire me with the new work they exhibit every day.
Here’s a few that stand out from the crowd:
Nikola Tamindzic
Best party photographer out there. More here.
Cymagen
Beautiful lighting, mood, locations and women.
Jeremy Cowart
Great band promo shots amongst other things.
Tom Williams
This guy takes sympathetic on-the-street portraits of the colourful characters of Kings Cross.
Alex Craig
Another Sydney photographer – everything he does impresses me.
Merkley???
Beautiful girls creatively retouched. See also, my party photos from Merkley’s place.
Cybele
I’m biased but i’m always impressed by her eye and technique.
Robert Sargent
I don’t know anything about him but his old school film shots of anonymous women in various states of (un)dress are mysterious and unique.
Kara Yerex
Beautifully stylised photographs including self-portraits.
I like them all for different reasons, but what they have in common is a unique personal aesthetic – i can see a consistency in their work. They’re not just taking snapshots, they’re telling stories and making something beautiful.
No doubt i’ve left people off the list but that just leaves room for more later. Any personal faves of yours you’d care to share?
Jay Parkinson
His ‘aspiring..‘ collection is superb.
Hog
Shoots film with English rockers.
Denis McDonald
NYC Treeman – For images he collects rather than the images he makes..
Telstar Logistics – for the places he gets to go..
AlwaysAwake – for this guy and the nuns..
Thanks fellas.
James, both those guys are in my contacts and i was tempted to put them in the list, jay parkinson especially.
Nicholoas, all those are new to me – good stuff.
i don’t know how common a tactic it is, but browsing my contacts’ (and their contacts) favourites is my preferred method of discovering new flickr goodness. i’m bummed that favourites aren’t offered up as feeds..
flickr.com/explore and “interestingness” seem to favour a certain slickness that i can’t always engage with..
i spoke too soon.. this creates feeds from user’s favourites.. gawdbless greasemonkey..
Dan, have you seen that Andy Rosen, photographer of punk in the 80s, has a Flickr account where he posts some of his old pictures?
http://flickr.com/photos/punkphotos/
I didn’t spot him in your contacts so I thought I’d point him out.
hogs photos are top shelf. i cannot work out the lighting that he gets in some of his pics…
and i know that he is not really involved in flickr too much these days but cole rise is amazing… 8 hours work on 1 picture!
this guy constantly amazes me!

i also like jay darkshapes , ferklint and noah kalina.
ok… so you’ve inspired me to spend more time exploring – these are awesome… and also to post more photos.
Pity that one needs to sleep to function properly – otherwise I could do all these things and work and have time left to have regular caffiene
