Last week i went to see and photograph Joan as Policewoman (aka Joan Wasser) at @Newtown. I first saw her over 10 years ago (yes, 10 years!) at the Enmore Theatre playing violin with a band called The Dambuilders who were supporting Jeff Buckley. She’s changed quite a bit, the wild dreads have made way for a more sophisticated evening gown look. She’s still real easy on the eye.
The show was one of those site down affairs, so Matt, Cybele and i had to huddle down the front on our knees. To add to our discomfort the room was pindrop silent, so everytime the shutter went it seemed to echo round the room, making us painfully self conscious. I only ended up taking 12 shots because i didn’t want to create a distubance with all the clicking.
It turns out Joan had no problem with it. Cybele messaged her on myspace and Joan replied saying she loves the click of the cameras, it makes her feel like Fidel Castro 🙂

The same happened to me at Martha Wainwright. The room was dead silent and I was trying to take photos. Only difference was I was using my *cough* camera phone :-P. Bloody FAKE shutter sound! You can’t turn the damn thing off.
I didn’t even know she was in town. I so would have loved to see this gig big time.
I sympathise. The fake shutter sounds on cameras and phones are ridiculous, can’t believe you can’t turn them off. But i remember reading somewhere that it is on purpose so people can’t take sneaky shots in changerooms and toilets and the like.
When i saw Martha Wainright at the Great Escape Festival there was almost fights in the crowd between people that wanted to site and those that wanted to stand. It was such an agro crowd for a chilled out performance.
