My Disco are an intense guitar, drums, bass combo from Melbourne who put on a killer live show. I don’t quite know how to describe them so i’ll quote from their bio which says they’re "renowned for their angular, agitated guitar sounds and an intricate time feel". As well as the angular guitars it’s the basslines that hook me.
Here’s an mp3 of their song Perfect Protection from their new album Cancer. It’s good, but doesn’t come across as well on record as it does live.
These photos were taken for Mess and Noise at their recent gig at the Annandale, the same night i photographed that other disco band, Panic! at the Disco. So unfortunately i missed Macromantics who was on first.
They are indeed a great live act – saw them 3 times last year. I’d liken them to Gang of Four (listen to Leisure and I think you’ll see what I mean) and The Fall, but then you could probably say that about most post punk / new wave angular guitar acts these days! The drummer really makes it for me though, really inventive percussionist…
What’s the lighting rig like at the Annandale.. I’ve only ever been there once and the band I was shooting, one of my mates bands, was only on the little back stage and it was red light or nothing!!
The Annandale is probably one of the better venues in Sydney in terms of it’s stage lighting. It’s not often only red light.
Dan, that photo of the My Disco drummer is fantastic! You don’t often see good photos of drummers, but you’ve got a great capture there.
