The Vines at The Annandale

The Vines

The Vines played the last show of their 3 night stint at The Annandale on Friday.

The Vines

The sold out crowd was mental for them. The front row seemed to be filled with young women, behind them a pit of moshing blokes. There was quite a lot of crowd surfing which i haven’t seen for some time.

The Vines

I was half expecting to be dissapointed by a more sedate Craig Nicholls, medicated out of his spontaneous behaviour and odd personality. But that wasn’t the case. He concentrated on playing the songs, and actually doing a good job of singing but was full of jokes and chats with the audience between songs. He seemed intent on getting a response from the crowd and at one point leapt into the audience, threatening to go to the back of the room to provoke them.

The Vines

If this show was anything to go by, The Vines are back in form and will hopefully be doing more touring soon.

  1. That’s great to hear. I missed out the time they came to Perth for the BDO. Local media was talking a lot of crap about them, and it just wouldn’t stop.
I’m looking forward to when (if!) they come to Perth.

  2. MAte i love your photography…….
so beautifully shot….captures atmosphere very true to life

  3. The last time a photographer used a flash at a Vines gig at The Annandale they got their camera smashed and their head belted by Craig. Fair enough too…
Whatever happened to first 3 Songs No Flash?

  4. Thanks for your input John. Why the aggressive tone?
I prefer not to use flash, and when i do use it it’s very sparingly, plus i bounce it off a ceiling, so it’s never pointing directly in the performer or audiences eyes.
But when you’ve been commissioned to take photos, and the only way you’ll get a clear, sharp shot is using flash, i occasionally make the judgement to do so. That’s unless i’ve been directed otherwise by security or a tour manager or publicist or whoever. There was no such direction given to me at The Vines show.
A fellow photographer i spoke to before the gig had actually spoken to Craig that night and asked about using flash. Craig personally told him it was ok, so i didn’t feel too bad about using the flash a few times as well.
Perhaps you shouldn’t be so quick to pass judgement on me.

  5. Dan,
Great photos as always. I was at the Vines gig at the Corner and that absolutely went off.
John, lots of people were using the flash on their compact cameras at the Melbourne gig. The guys didn’t seem to mind at all (if anything Chris was very mellow that night). Sure, we should try and avoid flash where possible but there are times when it just isn’t.
    Cheers,
    BC

  6. Awesome shots as always Dan. I caught the Vines amazing first couple of shows in the New York (CBGBs, Mercury Lounge) and was pretty shocked at how fast they seemed to fall apart. It’s good to see they’re back to doing quality music.
