For reasons unknown, The Killers aren’t fond of having their photo taken onstage. They were the only band on the Big Day Out lineup to ban photographers shooting them. And at their own concert at the Hordern Pavilion accredited photographers weren’t allowed to shoot them from the photo pit.
I was shooting the gig for Drum and thought it was a lost cause. I couldn’t be arsed fighting through thousands of mad Brandon Flowers fans to get up close. So i went up the back and snapped from there.
In the end i ran into another photographer who was shooting from the crowd by the side of the stage with his telephoto lens. He kindly leant it to me for a few shots so i got something usable for print.
Yeh The Killers are precious about their image, and yeh you got some great photos under the circumstances, but you know what stands out for me here…..another photographer lent you a lens. That’s totally cool and from what I’ve seen around, and experienced, there’s a lot of really really competitive photographers out there that would tell you to eff off or something similar..
Props to the mysterious photographer..
Yeah, it was nice of him.
There’s a handful of Sydney music snappers who i consider mates and we help each other out. There’s a comeraderie.
There’s the arrogant pricks too. But we just ignore each other.
I love the crops, especially the long pano from the side over the crowd…glad you didn’t crack the shits and go home early!
Yeah there’s a comeraderie here in Melbourne too (from what I’ve experienced) but there’s also the arrogant ones. I tend to be fairly friendly so I put the arrogance down to jealousy.
Agreed on the quality of the shots Dan, considering the limitations. Used a potential weakness and turned it into an advantage 😉
Apparantly the reason why they banned photographers has something to do with Brandon’s wife. I don’t know what exactly.
