Facebook tipping point

Facebook

Is it just me or has Facebook exploded in the past fortnight?

I’ve had an account for about a year with just a couple of contacts, but in the past two weeks it’s jumped to nearly 100 contacts and is now a hive of activity. It appears to have reached a tipping point amongst my circle of friends.

Are people deserting Myspace because of the spam? Will they get sick of Facebook like they did Friendster? And what about Virb?

What’s your social networking tool of choice? Or are you one of these "i’ve got more important things to do with my time" people?

  1. people aren’t using ICQ anymore?
i’ve noticed the facebook thing recently too. wasn’t it a university thing or something to begin with?

  2. Yeah – i think it started in US colleges. It was different to myspace in that it was more restricted to real life social networks.
Now it’s open to anyone – but they still discourage you from adding people who you don’t really know.

  3. FB is just gonna get bigger now, they are just adding the new 3rd party apps this week.. like widgets on myspace. boom!

  4. It’s because of the Virginia Tech shooting. Apparently Facebook was THE means that people used to communicate with each other about that, and its usage shot through the roof in the weeks following the tragedy.
Great photos Daniel, by the way!

  5. I’d actually not heard of Facebook till a couple of weeks ago, my fiance’s friends are on there.. Not sure if I have the time to develop another social network though….myspace serves a purpose, but its so full of junk these days..
Livejournal just feels old and out dated, and its difficult to find people on there.. Never got into Bebo, WAYN, or any of those other strangely named ones..

  6. well i just learned today that facebook is releasing code to allow third party developers install add ons to the site.. so i’m guessing what this means is as soon as someone makes a multimedia rich components (read: music & youtube) it’ll take off. and i’m sure someone else will make the page customisable too. those are the only things that are missing from facebook i think, cos functionality wise it kicks myspace or friendster’s arse…even tho i’m still getting used to the wall to wall business

  7. I had a similar experience, my sister got onto Facebook and convinced me to sign up a fair while ago, which I did, but there wasn’t a whole heap of activity for months and months.
Then all of a sudden friends just started joining and in the space of a few weeks i’d gone from about 3 contacts to more than 50.

  8. Facebook is definitely a US college thing. I’ve had it since it started and, well, it’s now open to the world! I kinda liked it when it was only for college people but hey, I won’t deny that it’s really helpful with keeping in touch with people.

  9. I’ve never heard of it…I’M OUT OF THE LOOP!!! AHHHHH!! haha myspace is enough for me, even though I’ve stopped using that now, currently working on regaining a normal posture.

  10. I got onto facebook only to link up with friends of mine who refused to do the myspace thing. It’s certainly better structured than myspace though it will be interesting to see what eventually takes over myspace for music. All these sites are becoming a bit of a video format wars type deal. As a new format/networking site pops up it just means you have to be across the board for all of them.

  11. I’ve got more important things to do, but I signed up for a Facebook account in protest against MySpace.
It made sense at the time, anyway.

  12. I went from Bebo to MySpace but want to move onto Facebook now but since I’m not over 18, I’m not able to register. It looks great from the screenshots and whatnot I see (since basically everything seems to be blocked off when you are viewing as a guest) and I wouldn’t mind checking it out but I don’t think any of my friends will make the transfer from MySpace to Facebook in the end.

  13. *starts chanting for virb*
give it time – they’ll leverage (urgh – dirty word) their background with PureVolume to pull in the indy bands as another (better) base for bands similar to myspace. Time will tell if they can get the user base to support it though 🙂

  14. I got a facebook a couple of months back after a cousin (in college) e-mailed me to get one. Yea, it’s really grown because of, what I’m guessing to be, all the bugs on myspace. I’m starting to rely on it more so now because everyone I know is leaving myspace, but now facebook is starting to get really bad with all the new “applications”.
Amazing photos by the way, I hope I can get that good in the future.
