On mothers day last year i saw a band i’d never heard of called Wolfmother play to a very sparse crowd at Candy’s Apartment. Last night, a year and a half later i saw Wolfmother conquer a sold out and rapturous home crowd at the first of their two shows at The Metro. They were supported by The Mess Hall, another band i’ve been following for quite some time, first seeing them sometime in 2002 supporting Bob Log at the Hopetoun.
I felt quite sentimental seeing both bands come good – playing superbly to a big crowd who lapped it up. I also felt rather privileged to have a photo pass to get up nice and close and take photos.
A year ago i was just shooting gigs for fun with my pocket size low res camera from the crowd. Since then i’ve had several opportunities to shoot shows from the photo pit with a decent camera and it gives me a buzz every time.
For all my gig going years the photo pit was the spot i coveted. I still can’t quite believe it each time i get to go in there.
You can see my shots from last night in the Wolfmother and The Mess Hall gallery or on the Triple J website.
For a trip down memory lane (and an opportunity to see how crap my photos used to be), check out all The Mess Hall shots in my archive, plus all the old shots of Wolfmother.
who’d of thunk that tiny candy’s gig was the beginning of such big things for wolfmother?! death from above haven’t done too bad for themselves either – so glad i dragged my arse down to candy’s that night, not so glad we went for a drink at hugo’s after the gig…fuck i hated that place!
Happened to see the series already before I came here! I saw it on the JJJ homepage and had a feeling it was one of yours.
I especially like that b&w one you included in this post.
Knew you’d have photos up here in no time :-P. How f’n great was that gig!!! Good work Dan. Good work.

P.S. Out of curiosity (sp?), what resolution was your old camera?
I’m looking through all your old gig shots now 🙂
It was 2 megapixels i think. The first model in the Canon Ixus range. It was a great little camera, but kinda rubbish in low light.
I’ll be seeing this show at the Roxy of all places this coming Saturday. I’m sure some time will be spent at some classy Parramatta establishments before and after the gig. I’m actually looking forward to The Mess Hall more than Wolfmother.
That baby ixus is still going strong, one advantage of being Boud’s little sis is the inheritance of his old toys.
Ahhh…I’ve just purchased an Ixus 50. But mainly for times when I want to carry something small and compact with me that takes pictures instantly.
I was at that gig and the Roxy show as well. It was an absolutely awesome show. I only wish my photos were that good – but my little Canon PowerShot is trudging along. It’s hard to take photos from the mosh, haha. You’ve done really well for yourself, lad.
