Ground Components cover photo

Ground Components

At the last minute this week i found out a photo i’d taken was going on the cover of Drum Media. It’s the chaps from Ground Components.

I did their press shots several months ago, and the deal with those is i take them for the band and they get use them wherever they like. So you never know where they’ll end up. It’s rewarding when they get some high profile exposure, much like it must be for the band.

Ground Components are touring at the moment, check their myspace for dates.

The shots they used, on the cover and inside, were ones i kinda considered out takes which i didn’t photoshop at all. I selected and touched up a dozen or so of the ones i thought were the best, but included a whole lot of others on the disc i handed over. I forgot about these ones so it’s nice to see them rediscovered.

In other news, i was told today that the issue of Guitarist Australia with my photograph of Wolfmother on the cover was their highest selling issue ever!

Really? May I ask why you did it that way?

  2. Well if a band is getting photos done for their promotional purposes, they don’t want to have to get permission from the photographer every time they want to use the shots.
So they pay a premium for a pretty much unlimited license to use the shots however they like.

  3. Are there two brothers in the band? In the bottom shot the two members on the RHS look very similar.

  4. Yeah? I was told the INXS one ran in Inpress, i think this one may have as well. I haven’t seen a copy of either.

  5. Funny – it’s only through this site that I realised I used to work with at least half of the band.
Good ole Market Research – I’ve now worked with members from The Spazzys, The Ground Components, Kids from Russia and SubAudible Hum. I think Cut Copy may have worked there too but that’s unconfirmed. All in the one place.
Guess the job was good for something apart from getting me through uni.

  6. Excellent, excellent work and congratulations. WM will be in Houston next month at the worst venue in town. Lighting is a joke. I’ll be lucky to get a shot half as unique as yours.
Keep up the good work and, as always, I look forward to your work.

  7. Ahh yes, don’t worry, I realise that Dan. The way you phrased it made it sound like you’d done it for free, that was why I was asking! 😉
    Nice work, by the way.
