I’ve been keeping mum about this shoot, but i’m excited to post these shots i took of Katy Steele (of Little Birdy) and Sarah Blasko. They were taken to promote the Legs 11 festival and it’s going on the cover of The Brag next week.
The opportunity to photograph these queens of the Australian music scene was rather thrilling. The shoot couldn’t have been easier, Sarah and Katy were both lovely. While Katy was a lot more comfortable in front of the camera i think i got some shots where they both look happy and relaxed. I’m surprised how stress free it all went considering there was about 10 people hanging about scrutinising things. Plus the fact i was nervous as hell.
The photos were taken in Tony Mott’s backyard of all places. I’ve yet to properly meet the man himself, but i have done a photoshoot in his backyard.
Legs 11 is happening next Friday night at The Domain in the Royal Botanical Gardens. It’s a sit down with a blanket type affair, hence the picnic set up in the photo. Sarah Blasko and Little Birdy have new albums out this week, so they ought to be playing a range of new material. Another highlight of the night will be Tex Perkins and Tim Rogers playing with the Sydney Youth Orchestra.
As usual, many thanks to Cybele for her help with the shoot. It’ll be a fun week for us next week in terms of street press exposure, i have The Brag cover and Cybele will have a photo she took for the ARIA awards on the cover of Drum Media.
You did well Dan. Great pics and great to see you’re getting more exposure.
I find it strange that for the cover, Drum Media flipped the photo and colour shifted the orange clothes to red – does this usually happen?
I think you mean Brag, not Drum.
I don’t know what’s normal, but i’m not surprised they make changes. The designer probably knows better than me what works best for a magazine cover.
My bad, I meant to say the Brag.
The red could be because of the little red gradient emblem thing, (i’m not sure if its usually red?) to help integrate the image with the text…. other than that i don’t really see the point of distorting the natural colours that much, not to mention the dodgy shadow work behind their heads!
You got some great shots though, and exposure is always fun!
Neat photos, Dan. I really like the giggly shot. Sweet! I love the styling on this – the ladies look fabulous. Makes me want to go a-shoppin.
Nice photos, well done… Interesting that Katy is wearing 1 orange shoe and 1 black one. Nice contrast to the skirt.
Yeah, the orange in your pics is really nice.. shame they changed the colour. Yeah, they probably were trying to match it to the emblem, but I don’t think it was necessary. That orange is way too nice to mess with!! Your pics are really great!! I’m really impressed with seeing your pics so often lately. As well as taking some really great ones, you also have a knack of making people feel comfortable in front of the camera and it shows… That’s a really priceless quality to have.
Great photos Dan, congrats on the cover to both you and Cybele!
If i may… we need to change the colour on the cover because of the print gradient making the colours much different to what they appear like on your computer screen.
So, if we had of left it as is, you may have got a cover where Sarah looks like she is wearing a babyshit yellow dress instead of a vibrant hue of orangey red…
Printers also notoriously water down their inks to save money, so we have to pump up the pigment in order for it to stay as close to normal as possible!
Promise its not cause we are assholes like everyone thinks and we want to screw with Dans’ hard work!
Kx
