Red Carpet Offcuts

At late notice i was invited to the Jack Awards on Tuesday night. I was taking photos, and was ushered into an area reserved for photographers beside the "black carpet" to photograph people as they arrived.

I’ve never really done a red carpet type shoot before, so it was quite new and educational. I’m not sure i like it – when you’re in a roped off pen, amongst a dozen or so snap happy photographers clamouring for shots of the latest starlets, you feel like a proper vapid paparazzo.

Combined with the fact my flash was playing up, it was all rather frustrating and ego deflating. But valuable experience nonetheless.

I did get some good proper shots, but thought i’d first post some mishaps that i rather like.

  1. Hey Dan,
Who’s the band in the 3rd photo with the washed-out faces?
    Faker maybe?

  2. at least your subjects didn’t laugh at your tiny substitute camera (that you couldn’t even work out how to use)…
there you are Daniel Boud [or is it Boyd? ;)] even your mistakes are pretty!

  3. Good guess Blake – Faker it is. Winners of best newcomer.
And Portek, no more Boyd jokes 😉 Feel free to tease Cybil though.

  4. those mishaps are rad.. i dont know if even want to see the proper ones! hhaa, great work

  5. the faker shot is one of my favourite shots ever.
somehow it makes me very happy

  6. Ahhh I love red carpets. It’s so competitive and when you get the right shot it feels so good.
I can’t wait to see your non-messed up shots.

  7. There’s something quite subversive and anti-celebrity about these shots. I like it, almost like your taking them back at a time when they had no “public” face!! I think I know what I mean!
