Goodbye Lanfranchi’s

Goodbye Lanfranchi's

As i brushed my teeth this morning i spotted this fresh graffiti out the window, "HELLO LANFRANCHIS".

I live in a warehouse space in Chippendale, commonly known as Lanfranchi’s for the "artist-run performance space" upstairs. It’s been going since 2002 under that name and has had many previous lives as a fairly bohemian living and performance space.

The name Lanfranchi’s comes from Warren Lanfranchi, who was murdered in the back alley (now graffitied with his name) behind the warehouse in the 80’s. That murder was made famous in the mini-series Blue Murder, which pinned the crime on notorious crooked cop Roger Rogerson.

But Lanfranchi’s and the warehouse is coming to an end. All 5 spaces, housing about 30 people have been served an eviction notice. They’re turning the place into a backpacker hostel to sleep over 300. So we’re packing up and saying goodbye to one of the last affordable, unrenovated warehouses left in the inner city.

  1. A sad day indeed… with regards to Roger Rogerson, I had the misfortune of being dragged to a Mark Chopper Reed “show” that this scum bag was also talking at. A more boring, self righteous, disgusting man you will never encounter. I felt rather guilty for paying $20 to hear this bloke brag about killing people… Turned my stomach.

  2. That bites Dan, good luck in finding somewhere new to live without having to spend stupid amounts of money on rent..

  3. hey man,
this is danny’s buddy who used to come around and pass out at various locations around te ware-house in a smoke induced stupor.
sad day that it’s coming to an end.
is there going to be a farewell party?

  4. Lanfranchis was on level 2 of the warehouse. The warehouse itself was/is known as the Chocolate Factory.

  5. Hey,
I’m doing some research into this space as a uni history project. Any chance you would be willing to help me out or know anyone else who could provide any information on the building whether factual or anecdotal, including their own experiences.
    Thanks!
