Pearl Jam and Kings of Leon

Pearl Jam

Last week was a pretty big one for taking photos, as well as U2 and Kanye West i also photographed Pearl Jam and Kings of Leon for Triple J.

It was quite a thrill seeing Pearl Jam again. I saw them at the Entertainment Centre in 1998 and was a massive fan in the early nineties. It was quite strange seeing these grown up men on stage, not the daggy young guys i remember from my youth.

Eddie Vedder

After three songs the photographers were escorted from the venue so i didn’t get to see as much as i would’ve liked. Being the dork i am i logged in to YouTube when i got home and watched all the old Pearl Jam videos i could find. It brought back memories of when i used to tape Rage every weekend. I’ve seen those early Pearl Jam videos so many times. They really are an awesome band.

Here’s a performance of Alive on Saturday Night Live from 1992:

And here’s a performance of Alive from this year (14 years later!), with a nice intro from Eddie Vedder explaining the song:

Pearl Jam’s support act was Kings of Leon who i’ve seen several times now. I do like them, especially their second album, even if their stage presence leaves something to be desired. I guess you can get away with a lack of crowd interaction when you’re so damn pretty.

  1. i saw pearl jam last week! teenage reminiscence…
    beautiful kings of leon photos!
not enough PJ photos of stone gossard πŸ˜›

  2. I’ve seen KOL three times. Two of them they were on fire, the other one they were really boring.
    Nice shots!

  3. Despite a lot of my friends being huge Pearl Jam fans growing up, I was never a Pearl Jam fan. It was always Nirvana for me. The angst felt stronger and music less commercial.
Ahhhhh and taping RAGE every weekend. Had to love those LP settings on the old video cassettes. 8 hours of none stop musac.

  4. I never understood the Pearl Jam vs Nirvana divide. I think the disparaging remarks Kurt Cobain once said about Pearl Jam made fans think they had to choose.
Ten by Pearl Jam is still once of my favourite ever albums. As is Nevermind.

  5. Real nice set there.
What program do you use for watermarking?

  6. Dan, thanks for finding and sharing those videos. The 2nd one brought a tear to my eye.. I’ll be seeing them Saturday night.
To this day, meeting Eddie Vedder is the single biggest moment of my life..

  7. I too used to tape Rage religiously and I can’t bare to throw them away although the picture is now crap.
I’m seeing Pearl Jam tonight and I can’t wait. That recent Alive performance you posted gave me a lump in my throat. (bless You Tube :-P). Nice shots too.

  8. Eddie Vedder is still hot! I also used to tape Rage each weekend, when I was a wee young lass. Ahh, the memories. Great shots.

  9. I think I’m content never to listen to Pearl Jam ever again, although I did like them when I was very young. We’ve just moved on from one another.
But I remember ‘Rearview Mirror’ from SNL was a great performance, and them doing ‘Keep on rockin’ in the free world’ at the MTV music awards with Neil Young was amazing.
All of that footage is hidden away somewhere in my ridiculously large music video archive. I should have added playlists with each video because there are some rare nuggets of gold scattered throughout.

  10. Nice photos as always Dan..
I shot Pearl Jam lastnight in Newcastle, so so easy to work with that much light.. Luckily I managed to see them in Melbourne last weekend so I knew what I was in for lighting wise..
Pity you didnt get to hang around for the whole show, if Newcastle and Melbourne were anything to go by you missed out.. πŸ™

  11. Dan – as always awesome photos. I am now 100% convinced that you are my evil Australian twin. Absolutely love Pearl Jam and have been in their fan club since I was 15. Those videos are amazing. I have them stored in my brain from when they both occurred. I’ve only seen PJ once (but the 15 times I’ve seen KOL have helped even that out!) πŸ™‚
    Cheers.

  12. Escorted out of the gig after 3 songs? You weren’t even allowed entry to the general admission bit? The bigger the gig the lesser the perks eh?

  13. is it me or does caleb followill look justlike dave gilmour up there???
