Howling Bells, Red Riders and Sparkadia

Howling Bells

Here’s some pictures of Howling Bells show last night at The Annandale. After moving to the UK it was a triumphant homecoming for the band formerly known as Waikiki. The show sold out several days earlier and expectations were high.

Howling Bells

It’s amazing what a good rap from NME and airplay on the OC will do for a band. It wasn’t that long ago i recall them playing a month long residency at Spectrum that didn’t get much attention. But it helps their album is really rather good. And they have such a spunky frontwoman. Have a listen to Setting Sun (mp3) and check out their website.

Sparkadia

The support acts were top notch too, my old faves Sparkadia emerged from hibernation in their new three piece formation. They’ve also got the plum Death Cab for Cutie support slot next weekend.

Red Riders

Red Riders also impressed as usual with their polished pop.

The show also provided a good opportunity to test out the Canon 85mm f1.8 lens that i bought that day.

  1. She is so beautiful! And I’ll vouch for the awesome album too.
It’s also cool when you find out that Juanita Stein is one of your friends’ cousins! I just wish they came to Perth.

  2. wow, that new lense worked well for you then! i struggled with the red lights and those two friggin microphones!! good job!

  3. Ace pics! They gave me a hint for what to expect last night.
A new lens hey? What is it?

  4. What is the new lens? Or how is it?
It’s a Canon 85mm f1.8. So far so good. It’s a little too much if you’re in a small venue close to the performer. But it’ll be good for the bigger stages, like Splendour which i’m off too soon.

  5. Oooh, awesome! I was thinking about getting something like that. You’re right, it’d definitely be beneficial on the bigger stages. I’ll definitely look forward to your Splendour pics!

  6. Wow, so that’s where Waikiki went! Surprised, I haven’t heard Waikiki in such a long time. I thought the song ‘Setting Sun’ had a familiarity about it (besides that I have heard it on Triple J)…
